Official records <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Far East <strong>Air</strong> <strong>Force</strong>s and <strong>the</strong> Fifth <strong>Air</strong> <strong>Force</strong> are held by<br />

<strong>the</strong> U.S. <strong>Air</strong> <strong>Force</strong> Historical Research Center at Maxwell <strong>Air</strong> <strong>Force</strong> Base, Alabama.<br />

Records <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Headquarters, U.S. <strong>Air</strong> <strong>Force</strong>, are stored <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> National<br />

Archives <strong>in</strong> Wash<strong>in</strong>gton, D.C. A number <strong>of</strong> Headquarters files are still classified,<br />

although <strong>the</strong> staff <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> National Archives is <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> process <strong>of</strong> gradually open<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong>m for public exam<strong>in</strong>ation. Relevant Navy records are controlled by <strong>the</strong> Navy<br />

Department’s Classified Operational Archives <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Navy Yard <strong>in</strong> Wash<strong>in</strong>gton,<br />

D.C. However, <strong>the</strong> Navy has not declassified as many <strong>of</strong> its records as has <strong>the</strong> <strong>Air</strong><br />

<strong>Force</strong>. Because <strong>the</strong> air superiority campaign <strong>in</strong> Korea was largely an <strong>Air</strong> <strong>Force</strong><br />

effort, <strong>the</strong> classified nature <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> many Navy records does not pose a major problem<br />

to researchers.<br />

The ma<strong>in</strong> <strong>of</strong>ficial source for this chapter was <strong>the</strong> three-volume study <strong>of</strong> <strong>Air</strong><br />

<strong>Force</strong> operations prepared by Robert F. Futrell, United States <strong>Air</strong> <strong>Force</strong> Operations<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Korean Conflict, Volume I: June 25-November 1, 1950 (USAF Historical<br />

Study No. 71); Volume 11: November I, 1950-June30, 1952 (USAF Historical Study<br />

No. 72); Volume 111: July 1, 1952-July 27, 1953 (USAF Historical Study No. 127).<br />

The three volumes were pr<strong>in</strong>ted, respectively <strong>in</strong> 1952, 1955, and 1956, and all were<br />

orig<strong>in</strong>ally classified. In 1961, Futurell. with <strong>the</strong> assistance <strong>of</strong> L. S. Moseley and A.<br />

F. Simpson, published an unclassified account <strong>of</strong> <strong>Air</strong> <strong>Force</strong> missions and achievements<br />

<strong>in</strong> Korea that was based closely on <strong>the</strong> three-volume classified study. The<br />

title <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir jo<strong>in</strong>t effort was The United States <strong>Air</strong> <strong>Force</strong> <strong>in</strong> Korea, 1950-1953 (New<br />

York: Duel, 1961). Slightly revised, <strong>the</strong> same work was republished <strong>in</strong> 1983 by <strong>the</strong><br />

Office <strong>of</strong> <strong>Air</strong> <strong>Force</strong> History. Thorough, readable, and accurate, The United States<br />
