AIR SUPERIORITY<br />

In achiev<strong>in</strong>g de fucto air superiority, through a comb<strong>in</strong>ation <strong>of</strong> Allied<br />

power and Japanese default, <strong>the</strong> ultimate victors were able, as General<br />

Arnold asserted, to dispatch a lone aircraft carry<strong>in</strong>g an atomic bomb <strong>in</strong>to<br />

enemy airspace, dur<strong>in</strong>g broad daylight and without fighter escort, on its<br />

fateful mission to Nagasaki. Japanese commanders, hold<strong>in</strong>g back 10,700<br />

operational planes, half <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m kamikazes, from a total stock <strong>of</strong> nearly<br />

18,000 aircraft, had had ano<strong>the</strong>r end<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> m<strong>in</strong>d. The impressive statistics<br />

<strong>of</strong> Japanese military and naval assets at such a late date, however, do not<br />

detract from <strong>the</strong> achievements <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Allies <strong>in</strong> hav<strong>in</strong>g knocked out 20,000<br />

enemy aircraft <strong>in</strong> combat, but <strong>the</strong>y shed decisive light on <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>dispensability<br />

<strong>of</strong> hav<strong>in</strong>g f<strong>in</strong>ally projected air power deep <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>nards <strong>of</strong> Japan’s last<br />

perimeter <strong>of</strong> strategic defense.<br />
