Out <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Shadows: Canada <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Second World War and a contribut<strong>in</strong>g<br />

author to Men At War: Politics, Technology and Innovation <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Twentieth<br />

Century. He is also <strong>the</strong> editor <strong>of</strong> A Rattle <strong>of</strong> Pebbles: The First<br />

World War Diaries <strong>of</strong> Two Canadian <strong>Air</strong>men. His articles on aspects<br />

<strong>of</strong> tactical air power have been required read<strong>in</strong>g at West Po<strong>in</strong>t and <strong>the</strong><br />

USAF Academy. He is <strong>the</strong> designated pr<strong>in</strong>cipal author <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> forthcom<strong>in</strong>g<br />

third volume <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Official History <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Royal Canadian <strong>Air</strong> <strong>Force</strong><br />

(RCAF), which will deal with RCAF operations overseas dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> Second<br />

World War.<br />

ROBIN HIGHAM was born and educated both <strong>in</strong> Great Brita<strong>in</strong> and<br />

<strong>the</strong> United States before jo<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> Royal <strong>Air</strong> <strong>Force</strong> as a pilot, 1943-47.<br />

After graduat<strong>in</strong>g cum laude from Harvard University <strong>in</strong> 1950 and earn<strong>in</strong>g a<br />

Master <strong>of</strong> Arts at <strong>the</strong> Claremont Graduate School <strong>in</strong> 1953, he returned to<br />

Harvard for his Ph.D. <strong>in</strong> Oceanic and British History. After teach<strong>in</strong>g at <strong>the</strong><br />

Universities <strong>of</strong> Massachusetts and North Carol<strong>in</strong>a, he moved to Kansas<br />

State University <strong>in</strong> 1963. In 1968 he became Editor <strong>of</strong> Military Affairs and<br />

<strong>in</strong> 1970 <strong>of</strong> Aerospace Historian, journals well known <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir fields. From<br />

1975 to 1985 he served on <strong>the</strong> Publications Committee <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> International<br />

Commission for Comparative Military History. In 1986 he was appo<strong>in</strong>ted a<br />

member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> State Aviation Advisory Committee <strong>of</strong> Kansas.<br />

Higham’s pr<strong>of</strong>essional publications <strong>in</strong>clude such pioneer<strong>in</strong>g edited<br />

works as OfJicial Histories with contributors from around <strong>the</strong> world; A<br />

Guide to <strong>the</strong> Sources <strong>of</strong> British Military History; A Guide to <strong>the</strong> Sources <strong>of</strong><br />

U.S. Military History with Donald J. Mrozek; and with Jacob W. Kipp, <strong>the</strong><br />

Garland series <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>ternational bibliographies <strong>in</strong> military history. He and<br />

Dr. Kipp also edited as well as contributed to Soviet Aviation and <strong>Air</strong><br />

Power. Even more directly related to aviation have been his own monographs<br />

<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g Brita<strong>in</strong>’s Imperial <strong>Air</strong> Routes, 1918-1939; The British<br />

Rigid <strong>Air</strong>ship, 1908-1931: A Study <strong>in</strong> Weapons Policy; Armed <strong>Force</strong>s <strong>in</strong><br />

Peacetime: Brita<strong>in</strong>, 1918-1940; The Military Intellectuals <strong>in</strong> Brita<strong>in</strong>; <strong>Air</strong><br />

Power: A Concise History; and The Diary <strong>of</strong> a Disaster: British Aid to<br />

Greece, 1940-1941. In addition he has published a wide range <strong>of</strong> articles,<br />

and for all <strong>the</strong>se many contributions he was made <strong>the</strong> first recipient <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

American Military Institute’s Samuel Eliot Morison Prize for contributions<br />

to <strong>the</strong> field <strong>of</strong> military history <strong>in</strong> 1986.<br />

I. B. HOLLEY, JR., is Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> History at Duke University, Durham,<br />

North Carol<strong>in</strong>a. Born <strong>in</strong> Connecticut, he received his B.A. from<br />

Amherst College <strong>in</strong> 1940, and his M.A. and Ph.D. <strong>in</strong> 1942 and 1947,<br />

respectively, from Yale University. He served for five years <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> U.S.<br />

Army <strong>Air</strong> <strong>Force</strong>s dur<strong>in</strong>g World War I1 and <strong>the</strong>n jo<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>the</strong> U.S. <strong>Air</strong> <strong>Force</strong><br />
