concerning the 1864 Confederate campaign against Washington, which
was published in 1989.
ALVIN D. COOX holds a M.A. and a Ph.D. in history from Harvard
University, is currently Professor of History and Director of the Japan
Studies Institute at San Diego State University, and is also Adjunct Professor
of Strategy and Policy at the U.S. Naval War College’s San Diego
Graduate Seminar Program. Among his awards are a Certificate of Commendation
from the Institute of Technology of the Air University; a Citation
for Outstanding Contributions in the Field of Aerospace Education
from the San Diego Chapter of the Air Force Association; and a Writing
Award from the U.S. Air Force Historical Foundation. He also has
received the Samuel Eliot Morison Prize from the American Military Institute,
and the California State University Trustees’ Outstanding Professor
Award for scholarly and teaching excellence. The author of numerous
books and articles dealing with the prelude to and course of the Pacific War,
he has in addition contributed to The Historical Encyclopedia of World War
11 (1980), the TimelLife book Bombers Over Japan (1982); and The Cambridge
History of Japan (1989). His latest publication is the two-volume
study of ground and air operations in limited war in the Far East, Nomonhan:
Japan Against Russia 1939 (1986).
BRERETON GREENHOUS is a historian with the Canadian Department
of National Defence and has a special interest in the tactical aspects
of the aircraftlarmor interface. He was born in the United Kingdom in 1929
and has served in the British Army, with the Malayan Police, and in the
Canadian Army between 1947 and 1965. Turning to an academic career, he
earned a Bachelor of Arts at Carleton University, Ottawa, and a Master of
Arts at Queen’s University, Kingston. He taught at Lakehead University,
Thunder Bay, Ontario, before taking his present post in 1971. He is the
author of two regimental histories: Dragoon: the Centennial History of the
Royal Canadian Dragoons, 1883-1983; and Semper Paratus: the History
of the Royal Hamilton Light Infantry, 1862-1977. He is co-author of
