concern<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> 1864 Confederate campaign aga<strong>in</strong>st Wash<strong>in</strong>gton, which<br />

was published <strong>in</strong> 1989.<br />

ALVIN D. COOX holds a M.A. and a Ph.D. <strong>in</strong> history from Harvard<br />

University, is currently Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> History and Director <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Japan<br />

<strong>Studies</strong> Institute at San Diego State University, and is also Adjunct Pr<strong>of</strong>essor<br />

<strong>of</strong> Strategy and Policy at <strong>the</strong> U.S. Naval War College’s San Diego<br />

Graduate Sem<strong>in</strong>ar Program. Among his awards are a Certificate <strong>of</strong> Commendation<br />

from <strong>the</strong> Institute <strong>of</strong> Technology <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Air</strong> University; a Citation<br />

for Outstand<strong>in</strong>g Contributions <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Field <strong>of</strong> Aerospace Education<br />

from <strong>the</strong> San Diego Chapter <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Air</strong> <strong>Force</strong> Association; and a Writ<strong>in</strong>g<br />

Award from <strong>the</strong> U.S. <strong>Air</strong> <strong>Force</strong> Historical Foundation. He also has<br />

received <strong>the</strong> Samuel Eliot Morison Prize from <strong>the</strong> American Military Institute,<br />

and <strong>the</strong> California State University Trustees’ Outstand<strong>in</strong>g Pr<strong>of</strong>essor<br />

Award for scholarly and teach<strong>in</strong>g excellence. The author <strong>of</strong> numerous<br />

books and articles deal<strong>in</strong>g with <strong>the</strong> prelude to and course <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Pacific War,<br />

he has <strong>in</strong> addition contributed to The Historical Encyclopedia <strong>of</strong> World War<br />

11 (1980), <strong>the</strong> TimelLife book Bombers Over Japan (1982); and The Cambridge<br />

History <strong>of</strong> Japan (1989). His latest publication is <strong>the</strong> two-volume<br />

study <strong>of</strong> ground and air operations <strong>in</strong> limited war <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Far East, Nomonhan:<br />

Japan Aga<strong>in</strong>st Russia 1939 (1986).<br />

BRERETON GREENHOUS is a historian with <strong>the</strong> Canadian Department<br />

<strong>of</strong> National Defence and has a special <strong>in</strong>terest <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> tactical aspects<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> aircraftlarmor <strong>in</strong>terface. He was born <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> United K<strong>in</strong>gdom <strong>in</strong> 1929<br />

and has served <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> British Army, with <strong>the</strong> Malayan Police, and <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Canadian Army between 1947 and 1965. Turn<strong>in</strong>g to an academic career, he<br />

earned a Bachelor <strong>of</strong> Arts at Carleton University, Ottawa, and a Master <strong>of</strong><br />

Arts at Queen’s University, K<strong>in</strong>gston. He taught at Lakehead University,<br />

Thunder Bay, Ontario, before tak<strong>in</strong>g his present post <strong>in</strong> 1971. He is <strong>the</strong><br />

author <strong>of</strong> two regimental histories: Dragoon: <strong>the</strong> Centennial History <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Royal Canadian Dragoons, 1883-1983; and Semper Paratus: <strong>the</strong> History<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Royal Hamilton Light Infantry, 1862-1977. He is co-author <strong>of</strong><br />
