In o<strong>the</strong>r words, <strong>the</strong> Russians attacked with eight welded w<strong>in</strong>gs fly<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>in</strong> trail or echelon. The <strong>in</strong>tended “sandwich” maneuver was a basic tactic<br />

<strong>in</strong> which <strong>the</strong> welded w<strong>in</strong>gs formed <strong>the</strong> bread <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> sandwich and <strong>the</strong> unfortunate<br />

victim or victims, <strong>the</strong> meat, contrasted with <strong>the</strong> more sophisticated<br />

“fluid pair” approach <strong>in</strong> which each slice <strong>of</strong> bread was represented by a<br />

s<strong>in</strong>gle mach<strong>in</strong>e. Hav<strong>in</strong>g “got <strong>in</strong> beh<strong>in</strong>d,” <strong>the</strong> Israelis were <strong>in</strong> a perfect position<br />

to shoot and, no doubt, <strong>the</strong>y did so.<br />

The Mirages, fly<strong>in</strong>g top cover, now swooped down, turn<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> action<br />

<strong>in</strong>to a classic m&lke, with:<br />

planes turn<strong>in</strong>g and twist<strong>in</strong>g around and fir<strong>in</strong>g guns and rockets [missiles] at each<br />

o<strong>the</strong>r. Break<strong>in</strong>g hard, I succeeded <strong>in</strong> gett<strong>in</strong>g my sights on a MiG. He had guts and<br />

turned <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> fight but 1 quickly realized he was <strong>in</strong>experienced. He made elementary<br />

mistakes. Div<strong>in</strong>g down to 2,000 m [6,561.68 feet.], I cut him <strong>of</strong>f and soon locked<br />

on my radar-<strong>the</strong>n we had time. It was clear that he could not get away. At a range<br />

<strong>of</strong> 1,000 m [three quarters <strong>of</strong> a mile] we fired a missile. The MiG exploded <strong>in</strong>to a<br />

flam<strong>in</strong>g ball.79<br />

With <strong>the</strong> Phantom on his tail, <strong>the</strong> Russian had to turn <strong>in</strong>to or out <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

fight; sensibly he turned <strong>in</strong>to it, where <strong>the</strong>re was always <strong>the</strong> possibility <strong>of</strong><br />

ano<strong>the</strong>r MiG gett<strong>in</strong>g a shot at his pursuer. One <strong>of</strong> his mistakes may have<br />
