Fish and fishery products provideon average 3.8 per cent of the total dietary proteinsupply in sub-Saharan Africa. Table 8.9 is afood balance sheet for fish and fishery productsof <strong>African</strong> countries for the period 1988 to 1990.Fisheries have an important role in food production,income generation and provision of employment.According to the International Centrefor Living Aquatic Resources Management(ICLARM), the number of full-time fishermenin sub-Saharan Africa totals approximately 1.5million.
