This means that experiences of successesand failures of technological applicationsare to be discussed and compared at all levels,national, regional and global. To this end a numberof collaborative efforts in the form of institutionaland thematic networking are used forknowledge and information transfer at regionaland worldwide levels. They include internationaleducation and training institutes, ‘train thetrainers’ programmes through inter-universitypartnerships, global and regional networks, public-privatepartnerships, and public awarenessraising programmes. Examples of such networkingsystems are given below.The Global <strong>Water</strong> Partnership (GWP): This isa working partnership involving all those concernedwith water management: governmentagencies, public institutions, private companies,professional organizations, multilateral developmentagencies and others committed to theDublin-Rio principles. This initiative is aimed atpromoting and implementing integrated waterresources management through the developmentof a worldwide network that could pool financial,technical, policy and human resources to addressthe critical issues of sustainable water management.Today, this comprehensive partnershipactively identifies critical knowledge needs atglobal, regional and national levels, helps designprogrammes for meeting these needs, and servesas a mechanism for alliance building and informationexchange on integrated water resourcesENSURING THE KNOWLEDGE BASE323
