Deforestationhas negative implications for the localenvironment (increased erosion) and the globalenvironment (fast climate change, threatenedbiodiversity). Many <strong>African</strong> nations have hadover three quarters of their forest cover depleted.Of the 159 signatories to the Conventionto Combat Desertification, 52 are <strong>African</strong>. Ofthose 52, nearly all have ratified the Conventionwhich entered into force in 1997.222
