Resolution Commemorating the Life and Deeds 0
JEROME KENNETU ATWATER
Council as a whole, offered and moved adoption of the following resolution:
1 I1l1uEREAS. Jerome Kenneth Atwater was born on March 5,1955 to Paul and Lector Marie Atwater.
1D He was educated in the Jersey City public school system, attending Public School #24 .
and Snyder High SchooL. Jerome "Lefty" was a quick runner and excelled in footbalL. An
outstanding athlete, he attended Saint Peter's College in Jersey City, where he earned
a Bachelor's Degree in Criminal Justice; and
1 I1l1uEREAS. Jerome Kenneth Atwater achieved one of his dreams in 1981,when he became a Jersey
1D City Police Offcer. Working on the Narcotics Squad and in the latter years, the
Emergency Services Unit (ESU), he also served as the driver and bodyguard to former
Mayor Bret Schundler; and
1 I1l1uEREAS. Jerome Kenneth Atwater received many certificates and citations during his meritorious
1D service to the City of Jersey City. He retired from the Jersey City Police Department in
2008; and
111I1uEREAS. Jerome Kenneth Atwater attended the Bergen County EMS Training Center and was
1D certified as an Emergency Medical Technician; and
1 I1l1uBRE. Jerome Kenneth Atwater married the loveof his life, Donna Wright on August 21,1976,
1D they met when he was in the sixth grade. The loving couple had two beautiful
daughters, Carmesha and Kenita; and
111I1uEREAS. Offcer Jerome Kenneth Atwater served his God and his community with great
1D distinction, committing himself to helping feeding, clothing, counseling the less
fortunate until he departed this life on June 28, 2011; and
1 I1l1uEREAS. Jerome Kenneth Atwater left treasured memories in the hearts of many. He was the
1D loving husband of Pastor Donna Marie Atwater; the ciiingfatherofCarmesha Atwater-
Swan, and Kenita Atwater¡ the precious grandfather of Chaniyah and Tamar Swan;
cherished son of Lector Marie Atwater and the late Paul J. Atwater; beloved brother of
Joseph S. and Stephen P. Atwater, and the late Darnell C. Atwater; adored brother-inlaw
of Kim Ali, Janice and Derek Wright Sr.; and several of nieces, nephews, cousins,
other loving relatives, Jersey City Police Department family, and friends; and
1 I1l1uEKBAS. A Celebration ofTriumph wil be held Friday, July 8,2011 and on Saturday, July 9,2011
1D the Jersey City Police Department and wil escort Officer Jerome Kenneth Atwater's two
white horse drawn hearse and cortege to his earthly repose.
~OW. TUEREFORE. BE IT RESOLVED. thatthe Municipal Council of the City of Jersey City
J; deems it a fitting and proper tribute to commemorate the life and deeds of Jerome Kenneth Atwater.
