Resolution Saluting the Heroism of
Rafael A. Nieves, Jr.
COUNCIL AS A WHOLE, offered and moved adoption of the following resolution:
WHEREAS, Arniy SPC. Rafael A. Nieves, Jr., aka: 'King Joker', formerly of Jersey City, was
killed on active duty while serving his countr in the United States Ary in the Pakika province
of Afghansta on Sunday, July 10,2011; and
WHEREAS, Army SPC. Rafael A. Nieves, Jr., born on July 23, 1988, grew up in Jersey City,
where he attended Public Schools #33 and #24, and Lincoln High SchooL. After his family
moved to upstate New York, he attended Guilderland High School in Guilderland, Albany.
. Army SPC. Rafael A. Nieves, Jr. joined the Ary shortly after graduating highschool in 2008;
and
WHEREAS, Army SPC. Rafael A. Nieves, Jr. was always passionate about joining the Ary.
In August 2009, he enlisted and was on his first tour in Afghanistan. He was an infantran with
the 1st Battalion, 506th Infantr Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, and iolst Airborne
Division; and
WHEREAS, Army SPC. Rafael A. Nieves, Jr. was an avid Har Potter fan and enjoyed
reading and video games. For those who loved and knew him best, he will always be
remembered for his charming smile, his gracious and respectful maner, and as a great friend to
all; and
WHEREAS, Army SPC. Rafael A. Nieves, Jr. was the beloved husband of Sarah A.
(McKiey) Nieves; a dear son to Rafael A. Nieves Sr., and Tina Roman and his stepfather
Thomas Priolo; a loving father to Rafael A. Nieves II (Tres), and Emma Grace Nieves; a
beloved brother to Mattew Nieves, Angel Santiago, Ash1eymare Santiago, and Life Nieves; a
stepbrother to Ky Bowen; and adored grandson to his grandmothers, Priscila and Haydee.
Army SPC. Rafael A. Nieves, Jr. is also surived by many aunts, uncles, 20 cousins and many,
many frends.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT that the Municipal Council of the City of
Jersey 'cty does hereby applaud the heroic acts and bravery of Army SPC. Rafael A. Nieves,
Jr., an honorable offcer of the United States Ary.
