7.9 POS Terminal and Terminal Requirements<br />

7.9.1 Card Reader<br />

POS Terminals and Terminals must have a magnetic stripe reader capable of<br />

reading track 2 data encoded on Cards.<br />

7.9.2 Manual Key-entry of PAN<br />

Transactions must not be performed if neither the magnetic stripe nor the chip<br />

on the Card can be read for any reason.<br />

7.9.3 PIN Entry Device<br />

PIN entry devices must:<br />

1. have a numeric keyboard to enable the entry of PINs;<br />

2. have an ‘enter key’ function, in order to indicate the completion of the<br />

entry of a variable length PIN;<br />

3. accept PINs having four (4) to six (6) numeric characters. Note: The<br />

Corporation strongly recommends that PINs up to twelve (12) characters<br />

be supported.<br />

7.9.4 Function Keys<br />

It is recommended that a “cancel” function is provided in order to cancel<br />

a Transaction if an error is made, or if the Cardholder wishes to stop the<br />

Transaction before it is transmitted for authorization.<br />

If an Acquirer allows for the cancellation of Transactions, a reversal must be<br />

sent for any Transaction that was canceled after it was authorized.<br />
