Glossary<br />

A bank holding company, which is a majority owner of financial institutions in<br />

more than one (1) country.<br />

<strong>Global</strong> Clearing Management System (GCMS)<br />

A centralized clearing facility owned and operated by <strong>MasterCard</strong> for the daily<br />

processing and routing of worldwide financial transactions between <strong>MasterCard</strong><br />

and its Customers.<br />

institution definition file (IDF)<br />

The computer-resident table used to identify Customers in the Corporation.<br />

institution identification number (IIN)<br />

A unique number that appears as the first digits in the PAN and is assigned to<br />

identify a group of cards belonging to an Issuer for the purposes of routing.<br />

(See BIN).<br />

institution routing table (IRT)<br />

The computer-resident table of Issuers’ Card prefixes or BINs/IINs used for<br />

Transaction routing.<br />

interchange fee<br />

A fee applied to an interchange Transaction, applicable to the two Customers<br />

participating in the Transaction as Issuer and Acquirer.<br />

International Organization for Standardization (ISO)<br />

An international body that provides standards for financial transactions and<br />

telecommunication messages. ISO works in conjunction with the Consultative<br />

Committee for International Telephone and Telegraph (CCITT) for standards<br />

that impact telecommunications. ISO supports specific technical committees<br />

and work groups to promulgate and maintain financial services industry<br />

standards, such as BINs/IINs and merchant category codes.<br />

Internet Protocol-enabled terminal<br />

Any POS terminal that uses Web-based communication protocols.<br />

interregional<br />

Activities or events involving multiple Regions.<br />

intraregional<br />

Activities or events involving a single Region.<br />
