Glossary<br />

application preferred name<br />

Preferred mnemonic associated with the AID, as specified by the Issuer. This<br />

field is up to 16 characters long. The application preferred name, if available,<br />

overrides the application label.<br />

approval code<br />

The code given online by the Issuer (or its agent) to the card when an<br />

authorization request has been approved. This code acts as proof of<br />

authorization.<br />

ARQC<br />

See authorization request cryptogram.<br />

authorization<br />

Approval of a transaction by or on behalf of an Issuer in accordance with the<br />

Standards. The merchant receives, via telephone or authorization terminal, this<br />

approval to process the transaction.<br />

authorization request cryptogram (ARQC)<br />

An application cryptogram generated by a Chip Card when requesting online<br />

authorization.<br />

Automated Clearing House (ACH)<br />

A group of processing institutions networked together to exchange and settle<br />

electronic debit transactions.<br />

balance inquiry<br />

A non-financial Transaction initiated by the Cardholder in which the<br />

Cardholder’s balance is displayed and/or printed. Use of a PIN is required.<br />

balance response<br />

Automatic communication by the Issuer of the remaining balance on a prepaid<br />

Card within the authorization response on a financial Transaction. Also referred<br />

to as referred to as account balance response.<br />

bank identification number (BIN)<br />

A unique number that appears as the first digits in the PAN and is assigned to<br />

identify a group of cards belonging to an Issuer for the purposes of routing.<br />

(See IIN.)<br />

block/unblock<br />

The Issuer-initiated suspension (blocking) and re-activation (unblocking) of the<br />

live application on a Chip Card. An Issuer can block the live application on a<br />

Chip Card during any online dialogue or transaction using script processing.<br />
