Glossary<br />

A cryptographic algorithm adopted by the U.S. National Bureau of Standards<br />

for data security. Encryption scrambles PINs and transaction data for safe<br />

transmission.<br />

debit card<br />

A plastic card used to initiate a debit Transaction. In general, these Transactions<br />

are used primarily to purchase goods and services and to obtain cash, for which<br />

the Cardholder's asset Account is debited by the Issuer.<br />

Debit <strong>MasterCard</strong> card<br />

A card bearing the <strong>MasterCard</strong> mark issued by a <strong>MasterCard</strong> International<br />

customer or affiliate which provides access to a cardholder deposit account for<br />

making purchases or withdrawing cash.<br />

decline<br />

Authorization response whereby the Issuer (or its agent) has refused to<br />

authorize the Transaction.<br />

digital wallet<br />

See remote wallet.<br />

downtime<br />

The period during which computer or network resources are unavailable to<br />

users because of a failure or normal downtime maintenance.<br />

dual currency environment<br />

A country, territory or zone in which two (2) currencies with different<br />

denominations coexist as legal currency.<br />

dynamic data authentication (DDA)<br />

An offline Card authentication technique in which the Chip Card and the<br />

Terminal must be active and capable of executing a public key algorithm. This<br />

process produces a unique digital signature for each authentication attempt<br />

thereby eliminating the possibility of replay.<br />

dynamic stand-in authorization<br />

Where allowed by a Region, authorization given by the Interchange System<br />

on behalf of the Issuer and at the Issuer’s risk, according to a number of risk<br />

parameters specified by the Issuer. It is activated dynamically, for example if<br />

the Issuer is unavailable due to network failure or if the authorization response<br />

comes too late or not at all.<br />
