system to avoid fraud effectively (SAFE)<br />

A central repository for fraud data from which monthly reports and statistics are<br />

derived and sent to Customers. SAFE assists Customers in the detection and<br />

prevention of fraud in addition to providing Customer fraud data.<br />

surcharge<br />

Any fee charged to the Cardholder in connection with a Transaction that is not<br />

charged if another payment method is used.<br />

tamper evident characteristics<br />

Cryptographic device characteristics as published in ISO 13491-1,<br />

Banking—Secure Cryptographic Devices—part 1 Concepts, Requirements and<br />

Evaluation Methods.<br />

tamper-evident device<br />

A type of tamper-resistant security module in which any attempt to penetrate<br />

the device will be obvious. Such a device can be used only for PIN encryption<br />

and key management schemes where penetration of the device will offer no<br />

information on previously entered PINs or secret keys. Also called a minimum<br />

acceptable PIN entry device. See tamper-resistant security module (TRSM).<br />

tamper resistance<br />

The physical capability of components within a system to withstand external<br />

attack and, if necessary, to destroy any confidential information contained<br />

therein.<br />

tamper-resistant security module (TRSM)<br />

A hardware device that meets the requirements of a physically secure device<br />

as defined in ISO 9564-1. The TRSM is used to ensure that the cardholder PIN<br />

and the PIN keys used to encrypt and decrypt the PINs are protected against<br />

external attacks. See physically secure device, tamper-evident device.<br />

tamper-responsive device<br />

See physically secure device.<br />

TC<br />

See transaction certificate.<br />

technical fallback<br />

A Transaction in which a Hybrid POS Terminal or Terminal processes a Chip<br />

Card using magnetic stripe technology because the Transaction could not be<br />

completed using chip technology.<br />
