partial reversal<br />

A reversal in which the original Transaction was approved for a greater amount<br />

than was completed by the Acquirer, and the difference between the amount of<br />

such original Transaction and the amount that was completed is reversed.<br />

pass-through account<br />

“Pass-through account” means an account for which the funds ultimately<br />

come from another account, which is maintained by an entity other than the<br />

institution that maintains the pass-through account. Pass-through accounts are<br />

also commonly known as “sweep accounts” or “zero-balance accounts.”<br />

payment gateway<br />

The Acquirer system that receives messages via open systems from the<br />

merchants, performs certain functions and acts as the bridge to the closed<br />

systems used for normal card payment transactions.<br />

payment system<br />

System that accomplishes the transfer of money.<br />

personal identification number (PIN)<br />

The unique, confidential number assigned to, or selected by, a cardholder<br />

to provide legal identification when used in an electronic funds transfer<br />

environment.<br />

physically secure device<br />

A type of tamper-resistant security module that protects any cryptographic key<br />

or PIN resident within the device against penetration attacks. Penetration of a<br />

physically secure device will cause the automatic and immediate erasure of all<br />

PINs, cryptographic keys, and all useful residue of PINs and keys contained<br />

within the device. A device is considered to be a physically secure device only<br />

when the device’s internal operation cannot be and has not been modified to<br />

allow penetration. Also called a tamper-responsive device. See tamper-resistant<br />

security module (TRSM).<br />

PIN-based Transaction (PBT)<br />

A Transaction verified by the use of a Cardholder’s PIN.<br />

PIN block<br />

The PIN and other information necessary to de-encrypt, re-encrypt, or verify<br />

PIN information.<br />

PIN entry device<br />

A keyboard device attached to an electronic payment terminal that enables<br />

the Cardholder to enter a PIN.<br />
