In thetexts of the two writers, one sees a preoccupation with the needto attribute a metaphorical significance to objects and commonhappenings in the daily life of the contemporary woman. Themessuch as solitude, sexuality and love are, in different texts ofthese books, involved in an aura of mystery and suspense. Thenarrative structure of the short stories of the two writers presentsalso convergences in the portrayal of the characters and in thenarrative focus. All the classic Munro and Carrano touches arepresented in the short-stories: the women who are slightly ‘different’and cannot quite ‘fit in’ anywhere; the women who make odddecisions and then, either stoically or wilfully blindly, find away to live with them; men with their terrifying self absorptionand self interest and those others who are given to sudden crueltiesor lightning brutalities. The aim of this study is to offer a readingof Carrano and Munro which dilutes geographical frontiers andinstigates a reflection on the universal character of the femininecondition in contemporary time.140
