The paper has a twofoldpurpose: (1) to discuss the lexicon about intermediality, narrative diegetics and narrative mediatics, used by AndréGaudreault and Philippe Marion in the article “Transécriture andNarrative Mediatics”, translated from the French by Robert Stamand published in the book A Companion to Literature and Filmin 2004; and (2) to apply some concepts used by the two Frenchauthors, some taken from physics, such as: “the power of inertia”,“the force of gravity” and “the force of attraction”; one takenfrom chemistry – “reaction” as a “secretion from the medium”,besides some terms taken from mysticism, such as “materialization”and “incarnation” as a process of intermediality, to the adaptationof Atonement, a novel by Ian McEwan (2001) and a film by JoeWright (2007). Underlying this study we also deal with UmbertoEco’s concept of the reader’s cultural and historical lexicon, considering that the personal drama lived by the major characters(Briony Tallis [played by three different actresses, at differentages]; Cecilia Tallis [Keira Knightley], and Robbie Turner [JamesMcAvoy]) develops having the Second World War as the background.144
