Thus, Irish cinema has clearly grownand produced some distinctive works that fashion images of thenation, particularly the ones that address the traumas of thepast as well as the way they have contributed to the ‘winningof the peace’, embracing contemporary ideological anxieties. Insupporting Irish cinema investigation, it has been an ambitionto encourage original research and approaches to the study andanalysis of Irish films in our academic contexts in Brazil. Thework that is presented here may be seen to fall into these categories. It involves the translation of two articles written by two differentresearchers on Irish film: Martin McLoone’s “Nationalism, PopularCulture and the Cinema in Ireland” in Irish Film (2000) and LukeGibbons ‘Projecting the nation: cinema and culture’ in ModernIrish Culture, edited by Joe Cleary and Claire Connoly (2005).Taking into account that the attraction to Irish Cinema in Brazilis relatively incipient in comparison with Hollywood or Europeancinemas, the ambition to chart the resources used by Irish criticsand theoreticians concerning the representation of the Irish onscreen seems to be relevant.292
