The main aim of the present article is, therefore,the presentation and discussion on how previous work on thefield of vowel studies of Brazilian speakers of English as a foreignlanguage provide evidence on L1 vowel sociolinguistic regionalvariation affecting L2 vowel production. Even though all previousstudies comparing the acoustic characteristics of BrazilianPortuguese and English as a foreign language vowel exemplarsdo not focus on L1 sociolinguistic variation, we can observe clearly,by the use of quantitative and qualitative analyses, how L2 vowelexemplars are influenced significantly by the L1 exemplars inboth spectral and durational aspects.
