II Congresso Internacional da ABRAPUIThe power of laugh in MarionTuu’Iuq’s “A Story ofStarvation” and Margaret Laurence’s “ The Loons”.Gracia Regina Gonçalves (UFV)Laughing, such as Deleuze and Guattari’s theorization abouta minor literature, has been in the concern of many critical thinkersas it comes to strategies of resistance to power. The presentpaper intends to exploit a text of Native Canadian literarymanifestation, namely contemporary Marion Tuu’luq ‘s “ A Storyof Starvation”) in relation to Margaret Laurence’s “ The Loons”,under the perspective of the use of laugh as an effective criticaltool. By representing a child who undergoes a process of sufferingand estrangement of the world around it, both stories employthe device in a way that they achieve an audience of readerswho have the chance of accessing a speech filtered by a child’sunderstanding, against its grain. In both cases verbal irony playsits role, even though each story presents different elements throughwhich injustice and prejudice are displayed. In the case of MarionTuu’luq ‘s story it is the very innocence and alienation of theprotagonist facing starvation which brings about the sense ofdiscomfort, more than the factual information itself which causesperplexity; in the case of Laurence’s a especial structure is developedto hide the Indian girl’s look upon people and the wildernessaround her up to the end. In both a reverse in the hierarchy ofthe text occurs through laugh, bringing about questions of racism, dehumanization and power.
