Programação & Caderno de Resumosthe memoirs of politicians, literary writers and filmmakers ofthe past - is something to be set alongside contemporary literaryand canonical life writing for theoretical consideration. Moreover,from studio bio-pics of the 1920s and 30s to more intimate televisiondocumentaries, there has been a closedependency of film/TV on the literature of lives as readilya<strong>da</strong>ptable sources. After briefly summarising the main theoriesof film a<strong>da</strong>ptation from fiction and theatrical production, thispaper focuses its attention more particularly on shifts in thenature of documentary outlined by Nicols and Bruzzi which emphasisethe reflexive and performative modes of documentary practice.Having defined the characteristics of these modes, the paperwill consider how viewers, including literary and media students,interpret the wider range of documentary modes used in mainstreamTV and film festivals to better understand the processes of memoir,autobiography and life writing. The aim of this paper is to sketchout some common ground between the analysis of autobiographicalwritings as literature and the creative and technical processesof a<strong>da</strong>pting such writing to a different audio-visual form and inits different modes. It is intended that some of the theoreticalissues arising from this round table paper will then be exploredin a more practical fashion in the accompanying workshop/seminar.52
