Programação & Caderno de ResumosThe Feasibility of Adopting Task-Based Learning in aConstructivist Teaching/Learning Environment ofa Foreign Language ClassroomRenata Nascimento Salgado (UFOP)Brazilians still tend to be skeptical about the fact that onecannot learn a foreign language at regular schools. Taking intoconsideration the fact that some researchers, such as Bruton(2002), Ellis (2003), Pica, Young, and Doughty (1987) and Willis(1996a, 1996b), have positively analyzed the practicability of Task-Based Learning (TBL), this study aimed at investigating the feasibilityof adopting communicative tasks with the objective of encouraginglearners to produce real language by expressing meanings andnoticing the importance of achieving a purposeful outcome. Thisresearch also attempted to explore how TBL works within aconstructivist perspective, as both perspectives believe that itis the learners who are in charge of their developmental progressand the teacher, in this case, negotiates the topics of the taskswith the students, guiding them in this process. Furthermore, due to the school?s emphasis on a constructivist perspectiveon learning, which sees the learners as the most importantparticipants in the learning process, TBL comes to serve thisfocus because it takes into consideration the previous experienceand knowledge that students have come across with and helpsstudents use this knowledge by socially interacting with theirclassmates. The findings revealed that teachers and learnersshow great satisfaction when using classroom activities thatpromote interactive discussions, although the teacher pointsout difficulties in dealing with the implementation of this newway of teaching.
