In fact, even to call it Englishwould be to stretch the imagination rather generously. I willlook at some of the divergent views in the literature and makesome speculations about possible implications for languageteaching.What Makes a Good Story?: A Mini-course on NarrativeStylisticsProf. Dr. Paul Simpson (Queen’s University)This mini-course on narrative stylistics develops a range ofpractical activities around the central idea of narrative structureand function. A model for narrative analysis is developed in thefirst part of the workshop, where a range of key categories innarratology are introduced. The main structures and functionsof narrative are illustrated with <strong>da</strong>ta and examples taken fromboth every<strong>da</strong>y and literary narratives. It is hoped that film narrativeillustrations can also be used.The second part of the mini-course is devoted to a practicalactivity, where a jumbled version of a short story is presentedto a group of participants who are asked to ‘reassemble’ thestory. In parallel with this, another group of participants areasked to engage a creative-writing-style exercise. The results ofall the activities are gathered and reported back to the group aswhole.56
