The researchconducted was based on ethnographic principals, and includedparticipant observation of the school context. The aim of theresearch was to give voice to the participating English teacherthrough the use of a journal, semi-structured interviews andinformal conversations. This data was triangulated with the viewsof other individuals within the school context: colleagues, administrators and students, as well as official school documents, such as the Pedagogical Policy Project and the School DevelopmentProject. Through this research, it was found that individuals?beliefs are mediated by the context in which they manifest andthat both beliefs and context influence what takes place in theclassroom. Four main beliefs were detected and explored: theteacher?s view of the students, the need for the teacher to moldstudents? citizenship, the lack of support that surrounds teachersin the school setting, and the impact of professional developmenton what takes place in the classroom. The implications, relatedto teaching English as a foreign language, include the necessityto revisit what it means to be an English teacher in a Brazilianpublic school, as well as to reexamine teaching practices andinterpersonal relationships in the school settingReflexões sobre ensino e aprendizagem de línguasestrangeiras: Crenças de alunos ingressantes do cursode Letras – InglêsMarileide Dias Esqueda (USC)Renan Varela Fratine (USC)93
