<strong>II</strong> <strong>Congresso</strong> <strong>Internacional</strong> <strong>da</strong> ABRAPUIano do curso de Letras de uma universi<strong>da</strong>de particular em SãoPaulo. Por meio <strong>da</strong> ativi<strong>da</strong>de, em que os alunos leram, interpretarame propuseram versões alternativas para um conjunto de chargesrecentes abor<strong>da</strong>ndo questões relaciona<strong>da</strong>s ao meio ambiente,buscou-se explorar as diferentes possibili<strong>da</strong>des de interpretaçãoe posicionamento crítico perante textos dessa natureza. Esperavaseque os alunos se confrontassem com uma rede complexa deconstrução de sentidos, abrangendo desde a identificação decaracterísticas do gênero textual, passando pela “decodificação”no nível lingüístico e a leitura detalha<strong>da</strong> <strong>da</strong>s imagens, atépropriamente uma compreensão dos embates ideológicos encenadospelas charges. Sobretudo, buscou-se promover uma oportuni<strong>da</strong>dede reflexão teórica e prática sobre a condição contextualmentesitua<strong>da</strong> e potencialmente complexa <strong>da</strong>s interpretações, apontandodessa maneira para uma prática pe<strong>da</strong>gógica que venha a contemplara multiplici<strong>da</strong>de de leituras possíveis sobre um tema de grandeinteresse nas discussões correntes sobre ci<strong>da</strong><strong>da</strong>nia global,responsabili<strong>da</strong>de local e o futuro do planeta.Interrogating Universalism: the role of pe<strong>da</strong>gogy,genealogy and dialogueLynn Mario de Souza (USP)Universalism has long been pitted against relativism and propose<strong>da</strong>s the sole basis for social and political agency and the establishmentof human rights; the assumed presupposition underlying thistheory seems to be that any form of so-called non-universalismhinders both social agency and political action. Along these lines,Gianni Vattimo (1997) considers universalism as being the productof interpretation. Concurrently, Ismael Wallerstein (2006) definesuniversalism as the social creation of the dominant powers. Takingthese ideas into account, the aim of this paper is to discuss thesubject of universalism as an epistemological construct reflectingand perhaps foreclosing ontological presuppositions, and situatesthe discussion in a critical pe<strong>da</strong>gogical context where genealogicalengagements of cultural beliefs in intercultural encounters areseen to be conducive to the search for alternative modes to uncriticaluniversalism and alternative forms of social agency.
