Firstly, we will discuss the current interestin the study of individual learner differences and the role theyplay in the processes of L2 learning. We will focus on the constructof “working memory” to show how it has been taken to explainvariation in several L2 tasks, including speech production. Secondly,we will report on a study relating working memory to fluency,showing that L2 speech seems to be more controlled and moreconstrained by individuals’ limited attentional resources thanL1 speech. Thirdly, we will report on two studies which lendsupport to the fact that working memory capacity may vary as afunction of L2 learning and that it may as well influence thenoticing and use of new grammatical structures in the L2.
