II Congresso Internacional da ABRAPUIgeographical positions and negotiate complex social asymmetriesin border-crossing.My hypotheses are that displacement is directly related tosocial mobility across “East” and “West” in The Pickup, and thatit produces social asymmetries between the two main charactersin the novel, which can be articulated by Caren Kaplan’s distinctionbetween travel and exile (1996, 27).The Irony of History: Re-telling the Vietnam War in FullMetal Jacket (1987) and the Short-Timers (1979)Rodrigo Martini Paula (UNESP/SJRP)One of the most remarkable traits of Stanley Kubrick’s filmsis the use of ironic imagery to create thought-provoking scenesthat question pre-established ideas and prejudices. In his film“Full Metal Jacket” (1987), this perceptive procedure is vastlyused creating classic scenes that make the viewer rethink theU.S. Marine Corps drill training (boot camp) and question theconcept of “war hero” during the Vietnam War. Kubrick’s choiceof using irony as one of the key points of this work, however, was not casual. The novel “The Short-Timers” (1979), by GustavHasford, upon which the movie is based, is permeated by ironiccharacters and scenes. Overtly using irony and eschewing traditionalhistoricism, both works embrace the postmodern project ofreevaluating the so-called Official History through differentperspectives. Based on the theories of irony by D. C. Müecke(1982); of postmodern fiction by Linda Hutcheon (1989)—namelythe concept of “Historiographic Metafiction”; and the problematicsof traditional Historiography by Hayden White (1978), this paperaims at investigating the similar and different uses of irony inboth novel and film. A thorough comparative analysis will permitof understanding how this narrative strategy questions theestablished History of the Vietnam War and forces the reader/viewer into rethinking such historical event.História da (in)fidelidadeRosa Maria Olher (UNICAMP/UEM)O trabalho tem como objetivo traçar um percurso históricoda tradução partindo de textos sobre a tradução da bíblia, a citar:299
