20.7.1 INTRODUCTION<br />

<strong>Solvents</strong> which are inhaled or gain access to the blood circulation via skin absorption or at<br />

times ingestion largely are metabolized by the liver. The liver has a complex mechanism<br />

composed <strong>of</strong> the cytochrome P450 enzyme, and other enzymes related to conjugation pathways<br />

such as glutathione conjugation. This is represented schematically in Figure 20.7.1<br />

It is therefore no surprise that in the occupational setting as well as non-occupational<br />

setting, liver damage anywhere from transient to subacute to chronic, and at times terminal<br />

liver damage has been described.<br />
