Method: OECD Test Guideline 301B and EC Directive 92/69/EEC C.4-C. Modified<br />

Sturm Test.. The test substance was added to a defined liquid mineral<br />

medium which was inoclulated with an activated-sludge inoculum and<br />

aerated at 19.7-21.9°C (mean 21.1°C). The inoculum used was activated<br />

non-adapted sludge from the Marl-Ost municipal sewage treatment plant.<br />

The inoculum had a bacterial count of 81 x 10 4 CFU/mL as determined by<br />

the Koch pour-plate method. The CO2 released was bound in the form of<br />

sodium carbonate in sodium hydroxide solution. Samples were collected and<br />

analyzed in duplicate for bound CO2 by TIC analysis after 0, 2, 5, 9, 12, 14,<br />

21, 28 and 29 days. Sodium benzoate was used as a suitable control<br />

substance to monitor the activity of the inoculum. On the 29 th day, residual<br />

dissolved CO2 was expelled by acidification.<br />

Remarks: <strong>LAS</strong> is readily biodegradable. The 10-day window criterion was fulfilled.<br />

The control substance (sodium benzoate) showed 89% degradation after 29<br />

days. This is a key study for ready biodegradability (see SIAR Table 4).<br />
