17.1.9 Letters <strong>and</strong> Other Communications in Published CollectionsYou may cite specific parts <strong>of</strong> books that collect letters, memor<strong>and</strong>a, <strong>and</strong> othercommunications because a specific reference provides in<strong>for</strong>mation not included in a wholebook citation, such as the date <strong>and</strong> participants <strong>for</strong> an individual communication. (Forunpublished personal communications, see 17.6.3; <strong>for</strong> unpublished letters in manuscriptcollections, see 17.6.4.)To cite such an item, give the names <strong>of</strong> the sender <strong>and</strong> recipient, followed by a date <strong>and</strong> (ifavailable <strong>and</strong> relevant) the place where the communication was prepared. The word letter isunnecessary, but label other <strong>for</strong>ms, such as a report or memor<strong>and</strong>um. Give the title <strong>and</strong> otherdata <strong>for</strong> the collection in the usual <strong>for</strong>m <strong>for</strong> an edited book. Notice the <strong>for</strong>m <strong>for</strong> a shortenednote, which differs from the usual pattern <strong>of</strong> elements.N: 1.
