But he wants Claudius damned to hell, so he coollydecides to kill him later: reasonNow might I do it [kill him] pat, now he is praying:And now I'll do't; <strong>and</strong> so he goes to heaven;And so am I reveng'd . . .[But this] villain kills my father; <strong>and</strong> <strong>for</strong> that,I, his sole son, do this same villain send to heaven.Why, this is hire <strong>and</strong> salary, not revenge. evidenceThat kind <strong>of</strong> explanatory introduction is even more important when you present quantitativeevidence in a table or figure (see 8.3.1).7.8 Be Open to SurprisesIf you write as you go <strong>and</strong> plan your best case be<strong>for</strong>e you draft, you're unlikely to be utterlysurprised by how your draft develops. Even so, be open to new directions from beginning toend:When your drafting starts to head <strong>of</strong>f on a tangent, go with it <strong>for</strong> a bit to see whetheryou're on to something better than you planned.When reporting your evidence leads you to doubt a reason, don't ignore that feeling.Follow it up.When the order <strong>of</strong> your reasons starts to feel awkward, experiment with new ones, evenif you thought you were almost done.Even when you reach your final conclusion, you may see how to restate your claim moreclearly <strong>and</strong> pointedly.If you get better ideas early enough be<strong>for</strong>e your deadline, invest the time to make the changes.It is a cheap price <strong>for</strong> a big improvement.7.9 Guard against Inadvertent Plagiarismwww.itpub.net
