Glossary
DDE: Dynamic Data Exchange. A Windows protocol that allows communication between applications. When
information is updated in one application, related information will be updated in other applications.
Dead reckoning: A method of navigation, where known values are used to calculate unknown values. It is a
convenient and versatile function since it is so crucial to the day's work in ocean navigation.
DEL: Delete
DEM: Digital Elevation Model
DEP: Departure
DEST: Destination
Dongle: This key, connected to the parallel port or to the USB one, allows the use of the software (starter key).It also
provides the opportunity of using a given configuration on a second computer without previous activation: it acts
as a mobile license / configuration.
DongleUpdate: A tool allowing the configuration codes manual input.
DPTH: Depth
DR: Dead Reckoning Function
Drift: The cumulative effect of wind and current on the vessel.

EBL: means Electronic Bearing Line: This is a bearing line from the center of your GPS position that remains
constant as its position moves. You use the EBL to measure the accurate bearing from your GPS’s position to a
target.
ECDIS: Electronic Chart Display and Information System
ECS: Electronic Chart System
EGNOS: European Geo-Stationary Navigational Overlay System
Elevation: the vertical distance of a point above or below a reference surface, such as sea level.
ENC: Electronic Navigational Chart
Ephemerides: Data giving the location of satellites for each day of the year or for other regular intervals.
ETA: Estimation Time Arrival
ETD: Estimated Time of Departure

F-Band: F - Band (applies to Radar)
FIX: Fix
FLS: The Forward Looking Sounder is a system that displays on screen a scanning illustration of underwater objects
such as fish or seabed.
FM: Frequency Modulation
FREQ: Frequency

GFS: The GFS model is a generic, worldwide model covering land as well as sea areas. This is the most common of
the models, and the one other software suppliers make available.
GIF: Graphics Interchange Format. This is a format for saving graphics files with data compression.
GLL: A data sentence that is part of the NMEA protocol for transferring information between electronic devices. The
GLL sentence contains position information.
