DDE: Dynamic Data Exchange. A Windows protocol that allows communication between applications. When<br />

information is updated in one application, related information will be updated in other applications.<br />

Dead reckoning: A method of navigation, where known values are used to calculate unknown values. It is a<br />

convenient and versatile function since it is so crucial to the day's work in ocean navigation.<br />

DEL: Delete<br />

DEM: Digital Elevation Model<br />

DEP: Departure<br />

DEST: Destination<br />

Dongle: This key, connected to the parallel port or to the USB one, allows the use of the software (starter key).It also<br />

provides the opportunity of using a given configuration on a second computer without previous activation: it acts<br />

as a mobile license / configuration.<br />

DongleUpdate: A tool allowing the configuration codes manual input.<br />

DPTH: Depth<br />

DR: Dead Reckoning Function<br />

Drift: The cumulative effect of wind and current on the vessel.<br />

EBL: means Electronic Bearing Line: This is a bearing line from the center of your GPS position that remains<br />

constant as its position moves. You use the EBL to measure the accurate bearing from your GPS’s position to a<br />

target.<br />

ECDIS: Electronic Chart Display and Information System<br />

ECS: Electronic Chart System<br />

EGNOS: European Geo-Stationary Navigational Overlay System<br />

Elevation: the vertical distance of a point above or below a reference surface, such as sea level.<br />

ENC: Electronic Navigational Chart<br />

Ephemerides: Data giving the location of satellites for each day of the year or for other regular intervals.<br />

ETA: Estimation Time Arrival<br />

ETD: Estimated Time of Departure<br />

F-Band: F - Band (applies to Radar)<br />

FIX: Fix<br />

FLS: The Forward Looking Sounder is a system that displays on screen a scanning illustration of underwater objects<br />

such as fish or seabed.<br />

FM: Frequency Modulation<br />

FREQ: Frequency<br />

GFS: The GFS model is a generic, worldwide model covering land as well as sea areas. This is the most common of<br />

the models, and the one other software suppliers make available.<br />

GIF: Graphics Interchange Format. This is a format for saving graphics files with data compression.<br />

GLL: A data sentence that is part of the NMEA protocol for transferring information between electronic devices. The<br />

GLL sentence contains position information.<br />
