Glossary
UDP: User Datagram Protocol connectionless protocol that, like TCP, runs on top of IPnetworks. Unlike TCP/IP,
UDP/IP provides very few error recovery services, offeringinstead a direct way to send and receive datagrams
over an IP network. It's usedprimarily for messages over network broadcast .
Upload: Method of transfering data from MaxSea to a GPS.
USGS: United States Geological Survey.
UTC: Coordinated Universal Time
UTM: Universal Transverse Mercator grid - a grid coordinate system that appears on most USGS maps. It provides a
perpendicular grid with constant linear surface distance values between each of its grid lines in all directions,
except near the poles. The UTM system divides the area of the earth between 84 degrees N and 80 degrees S
into 60 zones. While coordinates reported in degrees, minutes, and seconds of latitude and longitude are often
called true coordinates, those reported in terms of the UTM grid are referred to as false eastings and northings.
V
Vector: Images defined by sets of straight lines that are defined by the locations of the end-points. Vector graphics
require much less storage space than raster or bitmapped graphics.
VMG: Velocity Made Good - The speed at which the vessel is moving toward its intended destination, regardless of
the vessel's direction.
VRM: means Variable Range Marker: This tool is a user-controlled range ring that surrounds your GPS's position.
The VRM is normally used to measure distances to targets. The range for the VRM is displayed in Nautical
Miles and can be found in a tool tip on the chart.
W
Waypoint: A predetermined geographical position used for navigation along a route or for storing the position of a
particular feature.
XTD: Cross Track Distance
X
XTE: Cross Track Error - The distance of a line drawn from the vessel perpendicularly to an active route leg. This
determines to what extent the vessel is straying from the course of a route.
