12. SYSTEMThe function of the SYSTEM instruction is to provide specifications ofthe secondary HVAC distribution system to be simulated. The information providedincludes system type, size, zones served, optional components, operatingschedules, temperature and humidity limits, control strategies, outside airrequirements, and fan static pressures and efficiencies. In addition, theuser may identify "subcommands" (SYSTEM-CONTROL, SYSTEM-AIR, SYSTEM-FANS,SYSTEM-TERMINAL, SYSTEM-FLUID, and SYSTEM-EQUIPMENT) that contain the neededinformation. If this approach is not chosen, omit the SYSTEM-XXXXX keywordshere in SYSTEM.The <strong>DOE</strong>-2 SYSTEMS Program simulates a number of commonly used energydistribution systems. In addition, numerous optional features can be specifiedfor these systems. Individual SDL instructions and/or individual keywords inthese instructions may be required, optional, or not applicable, depending onthe type of system and the options being specified. A discussion of thefeatures of each system is included in Sec. B of this chapter.The facility being studied may contain (or require) a number of systems,of the same or different types, each serving different spaces within thefacility. In addition, for comparison studies, more than one system may bespecified and assigned to serve the same space (see PLANT-ASSIGNMENT instruction).If more than one PLANT-ASSIGNMENT is used, each system must bereferenced in a PLANT-ASSIGNMENT in order to be simulated. Care must be takenthat each zone is included once, and only once, in each total facility simulation.A system can only be referenced by a single PLANT-ASSIGNMENT.SYSTEMS YS TEM-TY PEinforms the SDL Processor that the data to follow are relatedto the des i gn and opera t i on of a speci fi c ener gy di s tr ibu t ionsystem serving one or more zones of the facility. A uniqueuser-defined name must be entered in the U-name field of eachSYSTEM instruction. Omission of this entry will cause an error.Input for this keyword is a code-word that identifies the typeof system to be simulated. The user must select one oftwenty-one (21) types of commonly used energy distributionsystems. A discussion of the features of each system and anApplicability Table are included in Sec. B of this chapter.The available SYSTEM-TYPE's in <strong>DOE</strong>-2 have been categorized intodifferent generic types, built-up systems versus packagedsystems and central systems versus zonal systems.Built-up Systems - Built-up systems, depending upon theSYSTEM-TYPE chosen, simulate preheat coils, main heating coils,zone (reheat) coils, cooling coils, baseboard heaters, fans(supply, return, and exhaust), thermostats, humidifiers, dehumidifiers,economizers, outside air dampers, mixing dampers,throttling dampers, and air dueting. However, built-up systemsare not usually self-contained; the central equipment (i.e.,boilers, chillers, cooling towers, pumps, etc.) that produceshot or chilled water and electrical energy is separated fromthe distribution system. That equipment is simulated in theIV.257 (Revised 5/81)
