and other factors combine to keep the incoming data in an almost perpetualstate of change. In some instances the changes are of such significance thatindividual fields in the tape format must be redefined and the ultimate usermust adapt this new information to his needs.At other times, the changes may be of such a nature that they can be incorporatedinto the existing format by converting units or other measurements.For example, windspeeds were recorded and punched in miles per hour through1955 and in knots thereafter. All wind speeds on the tape file are in knots,the earlier period having been converted from mph.Each selected TRY was resubjected to the computer and hand-edit routines,updates being made as necessary.Some additional conversions were done for the TRY tapes. For the periodprior to 1964, wind directions were reported and recorded to 16 points of thecompass. These values have been converted to whole degrees. The conversionmethod used is explained under Tape Field 005. The user is cautioned that forthese years wind directions will be biased. Beginning with 1964, wind directionswere recorded to whole degrees and these values will appear on the TRYtapes if the selected year occurs during this period.3. Use of the <strong>Manual</strong>This manual was designed so that recourse to additional reference materialshould be unnecessary. Occasionally, however, the user may wish to obtaincopies of original reference manuals or other information. This may be doneby writing to the Director, National Climatic Center, Asheville, NC 28801.Care should be taken to read carefully the general tape notations andcoding practices.VIII.20
B. MANUAL AND TAPE NOTATIONS1. FormatEach logical record (observation) is 80 bytes long. Archive files areblocked 24 logical records (1920 bytes) per physical tape record. Tapes maybe ordered with different blocking factors at no additional cost.The initial file contains TRY data for 60 stations, 20 stations on eachreel of tape.
