Most Western practitioners of Chinese medicine do notuse Lei Gong Teng (Herba Tripterygii Wilfordii) and may notbe familiar with this Chinese medicinal. This herb hasbecome very popular in China for the treatment of variouskinds of arthritis due to its anti-inflammatory abilities.Because it is also immunosuppressive, it is also used in thetreatment of autoimmune diseases as above. However, thismedicinal is toxic. In fact, its folk names include “walk sevensteps and die” and “intestine-breaking plant.” Symptoms ofpoisoning include dizziness, heart palpitations, weakness, nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, diarrhea, pain in the liverand kidneys areas, and digestive tract bleeding.
