Inthis case, appetite will be normal or increased and fatigue, lack<strong>of</strong> strength, and coldness <strong>of</strong> the extremities are not usually pronounced.However, the tongue will be fat and the patient willfrequently or easily catch cold.If there is fall allergic rhinitis where summerheat has damagedthe spleen qi, replace Bu Zhong Yi Qi Tang with Huang Qi RenShen Tang Jia Wei (Astragalus & Ginseng Decoction withAdded Flavors): Huang Qi (Radix Astragali), 15g, Mai MenDong (Tuber Ophiopogonis), 12g, Bai Zhu (RhizomaAtractylodis Macrocephalae), Cang Zhu (RhizomaAtractylodis), Huang Bai (Cortex Phellodendri), Dang Gui(Radix Angelicae Sinensis), Fang Feng (RadixSaposhnikoviae), and Wu Wei Zi (F<strong>ru</strong>ctus Schisandrae), 9geach, mix-fried Gan Cao (Radix Glycyrrhizae) and Chen Pi(Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae), 6g each, Sheng Ma (RhizomaCimicifugae), 4.5g, and Shen Qu (Massa MedicaFermentata), 3g. If there is also marked liver depression qistagnation, add 3-9 grams <strong>of</strong> Chai Hu (Radix Bupleuri). Ifthere is marked worry and anxiety damaging the heart andspleen, add 6 grams each <strong>of</strong> Mu Xiang (Radix Auklandiae)and Sha Ren (F<strong>ru</strong>ctus Amomi).ACUPUNCTURE & MOXIBUSTION: Shang Xing (GV 23), YingXiang (LI 20), Fei Shu (Bl 13), He Gu (LI 4), Zu San Li (St 36)ANALYSIS OF FORMULA: Draining Shang Xing and YingXiang diffuses and frees the flow <strong>of</strong> the nose. Moxibustionshould be used on Shang Xing. Supplementing He Gu andFei Shu supplements the lungs and secures the exterior, whilesupplementing Zu San Li fortifies the spleen and supplementsthe qi. Since the spleen is the root <strong>of</strong> phlegm engenderment,supplementing Zu San Li also helps prevent theengenderment <strong>of</strong> phlegm. Moxibustion should also be usedon Fei Shu and Zu San Li.ADDITIONS & SUBTRACTIONS: If there is concomitant kidneyqi vacuity, add Qi Hai (CV 6) and Tai Xi (Ki 3). If there isconcomitant blood vacuity and/or blood stasis, add San YinJiao (Sp 6). If there is concomitant liver depression, add TaiChong (Liv 3). For pr<strong>of</strong>use phlegm, add Feng Long (St 40).One can also alternate Shang Xing with Yin Tang (M-HN-3).3. KIDNEY QI VACUITY WITH LUNG LOSS OFWARMTH AND MOISTENING PATTERNMAIN SYMPTOMS: Enduring, long-term clear nasal discharge,nasal itching, frequent sneezing, white, swollen nasalmucosa, aversion to wind and cold, especially in the upperback, chilled limbs, a pale facial complexion, devitalizedessence spirit, low back and knee soreness and weakness,seminal emission, clear, long voidings <strong>of</strong> urine, nocturnalpolyuria, a white tongue, and a deep, fine, weak pulseNOTE: This pattern is most commonly seen in childrenwhose kidneys have yet to mature. In this case, they nourish yin to supplementyang based on the sayings, “Yin and yang are mutually rooted,”and, “Yang is engendered from yin.” Rou Gui, Zhi Fu Zi,Xi Xin, and Ge Jie warm and supplement kidney yang. Inaddition, Ge Jie with Wu Wei Zi warms and supplements thelungs, while Xi Xin warms both the interior and the exterioras well as diffuses the lungs and frees the flow <strong>of</strong> the orifices.Xin Yi Hua helps Xi Xin to diffuse the nose and frees the flow<strong>of</strong> the orifices.
