ANKYLOSING SPONDYLITIS (AS) 71ANALYSIS OF FORMULA: Ku Shen is the sovereign within thisformula. It is greatly bitter and greatly cold. It clears and disinhibitsdampness and heat. To this, Tu Fu Ling, Jin Yin Hua,and Huang Bai are also added to clear heat and resolve toxins.Yi Yi Ren seeps dampness, while Cang Zhu aromaticallydries dampness. It also treats wind evils causing impedimentpain. Niu Xi guides the other medicinals to move downwardssince damp heat manifests most prominently in the lowerhalf <strong>of</strong> the body.ADDITIONS & SUBTRACTIONS: If joint swelling is severe or ifthere is urinary pain, add nine grams <strong>of</strong> Ze Xie (RhizomaAlismatis) to strengthen the effect <strong>of</strong> disinhibiting dampness.If joint pain is severe, add nine grams <strong>of</strong> Qing Feng Teng(Caulis Sinomenii) and 15 grams <strong>of</strong> Ren Dong Teng (CaulisLonicerae) to soothe the sinews and quicken the networkvessels. If dampness is exuberant and has engenderedphlegm, indicated by inability to bend and extend the limbsand stiffness <strong>of</strong> the lower and upper backs, add nine gramseach <strong>of</strong> Bai Jie Zi (Semen Sinapis) and Jiang Can (BombyxBatryticatus).ACUPUNCTURE & MOXIBUSTION: Same as above. However,do not use warm needle moxibustion, only acupuncture.6. Typically, blood stasis complicates all enduring patterns <strong>of</strong>this condition. <strong>The</strong>refore, blood-quickening ingredients arecommonly added to other guiding formulas. Commonlyused blood-quickening ingredients include Dang Gui (RadixAngelicae Sinensis), Chi Shao (Radix Rub<strong>ru</strong>s PaeoniaeLactiflorae), Chuan Xiong (Radix Chuanxiong), Hong Hua(Flos Carthami), processed Ru Xiang (Olibanum), andprocessed Mo Yao (Myrrha). Commonly usedinsect/worm medicinals include Quan Xie (Scorpio), WuGong (Scolopendra), Feng Fang (Nidus Vespae), and JiangCan (Bombyx Batryticatus).2. <strong>The</strong> acupuncture protocol suggested above is administeredin China one time every other day, with 15 treatments equalingone course and clinical and laboratory results being seenafter three such courses. <strong>The</strong>se include a lessening <strong>of</strong> symptomsas well as decreases in erythrocyte sedimentation rateand C-reactive protein. When warm needle acupunctureusing this protocol was compared to regular fine needleacupuncture using the same points, the warm needleacupuncture was markedly more effective. <strong>The</strong>refore, it isrecommended wherever possible.3. Chinese medicine can slow or halt the progression <strong>of</strong> thiscondition and relieve its clinical symptoms. Thus it can obviateor reduce the need for NSAIDs, with the possible damageto the kidneys. However, it cannot reverse degenerativechanges in the spine, such as fused vertebrae.
