CHRONIC PROSTATITIS 1752. Although the Chinese literature contains case histories <strong>of</strong>yang vacuity chronic prostatitis, we have never seen this patternin its pure form in this disease. However, because <strong>of</strong> theinter-relationship between yin and yang, qi and yin vacuitymay be complicated by an element <strong>of</strong> yang vacuity.3. Because damp heat plays a part in so many patient’schronic prostatitis, dietary therapy is extremely importantfor the long-term management <strong>of</strong> this condition. Basically,this means a clear, bland diet.4. Daily perineal self-massage can be very beneficial in thetreatment <strong>of</strong> chronic prostatitis. In order for such self-massageto be effective, it must be done regularly over a relativelylong period <strong>of</strong> time.5. <strong>The</strong>re are several special point combinations which shouldbe considered when treating chronic prostatitis:Ci Liao (Bl 32) and Zhong Ji (CV 3). Both points should beneedled in direction <strong>of</strong> the genitals to induce a qi sensationin the affected area.Zhi Bian (Bl 54) and San Yin Jiao (Sp 6). Zhi Bian should beneedled deeply in direction <strong>of</strong> Gui Lai (St 29) to induce a qisensation in the affected area.Hui Yang (Bl 35) and Shen Shu (Bl 23). Hui Yang should beneedled deeply, 2-3 cun, to induce a qi sensation in theaffected area.Hui Yang (Bl 35) and Guan Yuan (CV 4). Hui Yang shouldbe needled deeply, 2-3 cun, and Guan Yuan should be needledin direction <strong>of</strong> the genitals so as to induce a qi sensationin the affected area.Jing Gu (Bl 64) and Da Zhong (Ki 4). Both points should beneedled with even supplementing-even draining method.However, the key point for treating this disease is still Hui Yin(CV 1). This should be needled deeply 2-3 cun or treated withindirect moxibustion depending on the condition. In addition,there is a new extra channel point, Qian Lie Yan Xue (prostatitispoint), which is located midway between Hui Yin andthe anus. This point should be needled 1.5-2 cun deep.6. <strong>The</strong>re are many new Chinese medicinal formulas for thetreatment <strong>of</strong> chronic prostatitis. <strong>The</strong> following two formulasare for the types <strong>of</strong> complex pattern presentations commonin our practice:Fu Fang Di Hu Tang (Compound Pheretima & PolygonumCuspidatum Decoction) treats qi vacuity, damp heat, andblood stasis: Huang Qi (Radix Astragali), 30g, Di Long(Pheretima), Hu Zhang (Rhizoma Polygoni Cuspidati), LaiFu Zi (Semen Raphani), and Chuan Shan Jia (SquamaManitis ), 20g each, Mu Tong (Caulis Akebiae) and Che QianZi (Semen Plantaginis), 15g each, and Gan Cao (RadixGlycyrrhizae), 9gQing Hua Tang (Clear & Transform Decoction) treats yinvacuity, damp heat, and blood stasis: cooked Shu Di (RadixRehmanniae) and Sheng Di (uncooked Radix Rehmanniae),30g each, Huang Bai (Cortex Phellodendri) and Dan Shen(Radix Salviae Miltiorrhizae), 15g each, Che Qian Zi (SemenPlantaginis), Bi Xie (Rhizoma Dioscoreae Hypoglaucae), andYi Zhi Ren (F<strong>ru</strong>ctus Alpiniae Oxyphyllae), 9g each, andcooked Da Huang (Radix Et Rhizoma Rhei), 5g7. Simple popular formulas include:A. Powdered San Qi (Radix Notoginseng), 3g twice daily, forstabbing pain in chronic prostatitisB. Powdered Hu Po (Succinum), 1.5g twice daily, for burning,difficult, painful urinationC. Powdered uncooked Gan Cao (Radix Glycyrrhizae), 20-40g daily, taken with warm water8. Long-term use <strong>of</strong> Mu Tong (Caulis Akebiae) is forbiddendue to the possibility <strong>of</strong> aristolochic acid induced nephrotoxicityin case <strong>of</strong> substitution.9.
