518 THE TREATMENT OF MODERN WESTERN DISEASES WITH CHINESE MEDICINEDISEASE MECHANISMS: Any <strong>of</strong> the above causes can resultin loss <strong>of</strong> regulation <strong>of</strong> yin and yang, qi and blood depletionand vacuity, lack <strong>of</strong> ease or smoothness in movement andtransportation, qi stagnation and blood stasis, and channeland network vessel obst<strong>ru</strong>ction which may then give rise tothe multiplicity <strong>of</strong> signs and symptoms associated with thisdisease. Because this disease mostly occurs or worsens afterexposure to sunshine, it is believed to be mostly due to externalcontraction <strong>of</strong> heat toxins evils. <strong>The</strong>se heat toxins enter theinterior where they scorch and burn yin and blood, impedeand obst<strong>ru</strong>ct the channels and vessels, damage the viscera andbowels, and corrode the sinews and bones and the skin. Inaddition, allergic reactions to foods and medicinals, addictionto thick-flavored foods, living in damp environments, andcontraction <strong>of</strong> the six environmental evils may all give rise tointernal engenderment <strong>of</strong> heat toxins. If the former heavennatural endowment is insufficient and original yin or originalyang are depleted and vacuous, then this can give rise to all thevarious symptoms <strong>of</strong> SLE. For high fever which will not recede or essence willsymptoms, add 0.3-0.5 grams <strong>of</strong> Ling Yang Jiao (CornuAntelopis Saiga-tatarici), swallowed down with the decoction.For low-grade fever which will not recede, add 15grams each <strong>of</strong> Yin Chai Hu (Radix Stellariae) and Di Gu Pi(Cortex Lycii). For bleeding, add 9-20 grams each <strong>of</strong> Ou Jie(Nodus Nelumbinis), Bai Mao Gen (Rhizoma Imperatae),Xian He Cao (Herba Agrimoniae), and/or Ce Bai Ye(Cacumen Platycladi) depending on the site and cause <strong>of</strong> thebleeding. If damp heat is marked with thick, slimy tonguefur, add nine grams each <strong>of</strong> Cang Zhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis) and Shi Chang Pu (Rhizoma Acori Tatarinowii) and deletethe Sheng Di, Xuan Shen, and Zhi Mu. For arthralgia, addnine grams each <strong>of</strong> Qiang Huo (Radix Et RhizomaNotopterygii), Qin Jiao (Radix Gentianae Macrophyllae),and Du Huo (Radix Angelicae Pubescentis). For severe thirst,add 12 grams each <strong>of</strong> Mai Men Dong (Tuber Ophiopogonis),Shi Hu (Herba Dendrobii), and Yu Zhu (RhizomaPolygonati Odorati). For pr<strong>of</strong>use erythema, petechiae, orpurpurae, add 12 grams each <strong>of</strong> Zi Cao (RadixArnebiae/Lithospermi), Huai Hua Mi (Flos Immatu<strong>ru</strong>sSophorae), and Ling Xiao Hua (Flos Campsitis).
