For concomitantspleen vacuity, add 15 grams <strong>of</strong> Huang Qi (RadixAstragali) and nine grams <strong>of</strong> Dang Shen (RadixCodonopsitis).ACUPUNCTURE & MOXIBUSTION: Da Zhui (GV 14), FeiShu (Bl 13), Tai Yuan (Lu 9), Tai Xi (Ki 3)ANALYSIS OF FORMULA: When needled together with supplementingtechnique, Da Zhui, Fei Shu, and Tai Yuan supplementthe lungs and level panting, while supplementingTai Xi supplements lung and kidney yin and promotes qiabsorption.ADDITIONS & SUBTRACTIONS: For concomitant spleenvacuity, add Zu San Li (St 36). LUNG-SPLEEN QI VACUITYMAIN SYMPTOMS: Wheezing and panting and shortness <strong>of</strong>breath which get worse on exertion, coughing <strong>of</strong> clear,watery phlegm, a pale facial complexion, a weak voice or disinclinationto speak, aversion to wind, spontaneous perspiration,susceptibility to catching cold, fatigue, a pale, fattongue with teeth-marks on its edges and white fur, and aweak or soggy pulse. When spleen qi vacuity is dominant,wheezing and panting appear and worsen with dietary irregularitiesand especially excessive consumption <strong>of</strong> uncooked,chilled foods, iced drinks, sweet or fatty foods, dairy products,fish, shrimp, or other sea foods. When lung qi vacuityis dominant, wheezing and panting appear and worsen dueto changes in the weather. In addition, there is a susceptibilityto catching cold, frequent sneezing, or <strong>ru</strong>nny nose. <strong>The</strong>former is a pattern <strong>of</strong> food allergy; the second is a respiratoryallergy.NOTE: This pattern is commonly seen in infants and childrenwhose spleen’s are inherently immature. It may also bedue to faulty diet as well as over-use or prolonged use <strong>of</strong>antibiotics. In addition, women are especially prone tospleen vacuity due to menst<strong>ru</strong>ation, gestation, and lactation.Further, both men and women tend to become spleen vacuousand weak with aging.TREATMENT PRINCIPLES: Fortify the spleen and supplementthe lungs, transform phlegm and stop panting
