Within contemporaryChinese medicine, gu are a species of chong or worms. However, they are unlike the more pedestrian form of wormsin Chinese medicine. Gu worms are, unlike roundworms, pinworms, and tapeworms, invisible and tend to causemulti-symptom, complex, chronic, and enduring diseases.Such gu worm diseases are hard to treat. They typically causea simultaneous combination of chronic digestive complaints, musculoskeletal complaints, and psychiatric and/or neurologicalcomplaints, and are often associated with dermatologicalconditions. The table on page 19 shows some of thekey characteristics of gu worm diseases.According to Heiner Fruehauf, many patients with intestinaldysbiosis, polysystemic chronic candidiasis, and intestinalparasitosis should be diagnosed as suffering from gu worms, and it is our experience that many patients suffering from anumber of the allergies and autoimmune diseases discussedin this book also suffer from polysystemic chronic candidiasisor intestinal dysbiosis at the least. Therefore, we believethat it is important to understand something about gu wormdisease when discriminating such patients’ patterns anderecting Chinese medical treatment plans.According to gu worm theorists, formulas for the treatmentof gu worm conditions should be made up of five groups ofChinese medicinals:1. Qi & blood moving & quickening medicinalsAlthough these five categories of medicinals sound very similarto modern standard Chinese medicinal categories, theyare not the same. Nevertheless, most of the medicinals inthese five categories are commonly used Chinese medicinalsin standard contemporary Chinese medicine. If one choosesmedicinals from all five of these categories of anti-gu Chinesemedicinals, one will typically wind up with what is alsoessentially a Li Dong-yuan yin fire protocol.Beginning with Zhu Dan-xi 21 and continuing up to today, 22the main disease mechanisms at work in gu worm diseasesare a marked spleen qi vacuity with dampness and/or dampheat and liver depression qi stagnation. Therefore, the maindisease mechanisms of gu worm disease are essentially thesame as Li Dong-yuan’s yin fire theory.
