He Gu is the sourcepoint on the hand yang ming, and the pain <strong>of</strong> tennis elbowis usually located on this channel. Draining this importantdistal point on this channel helps free the flow <strong>of</strong> the qi andblood within the hand yang ming. Use warm needle techniqueon all local points if there is prominent cold.ADDITIONS & SUBTRACTIONS: If qi and blood vacuity aremarked, add Zu San Li (St 36) and Ge Shu (Bl 17) with supplementingtechnique. If there is concomitant liver-kidneyvacuity, add Tai Xi (Ki 3), San Yin Jiao (Sp 6), Ge Shu (Bl17), and Gan Shu (Bl 18) with supplementing technique. Ifthere are signs and symptoms <strong>of</strong> systemic blood stasis, addXue Hai (Sp 10). If there is phlegm obst<strong>ru</strong>cting the channels,add Feng Long (St 40) and Zu San Li (St 36).REMARKS1. In real life, most patients with tennis elbow also have liverdepression qi stagnation either simply due to being an adultor due to the f<strong>ru</strong>stration <strong>of</strong> not being able to work or play.<strong>The</strong>refore, one will typically have to add appropriate qi-rectifyingmedicinals to the above formulas or use a liver-spleenharmonizing formula, such as Xiao Yao San (RamblingPowder) and then modify that for blood vacuity, blood stasis,and/or wind cold impediment. In addition, if the patientclearly has a pattern based on their habitual bodily constitution,then one should choose a formula for that constitutionand modify it for tennis elbow, keeping in mind the mainmechanisms <strong>of</strong> this disease. In other words, if a person had aliver blood-kidney yin vacuity bodily constitution, then onemight start with Liu Wei Di Huang Wan (Six FlavorsRehmannia Pills). If one has a phlegm damp bodily constitution,then one might modify Er Chen Tang (Two Aged[Ingredients] Decoction), etc.2. In order to get a satisfactory result with tennis elbow, thepatient needs to refrain from all activities, be they work orplay, that aggravate this condition. Until or unless the patientis willing to allow the inflammation <strong>of</strong> their lateral epicondyleto heal, no amount <strong>of</strong> acupuncture or Chinese medicinalsare going to get a satisfactory effect. If the cause <strong>of</strong>this inflammation is work related, the patient should beadvised to modify their equipment or their work habits. Thismay mean using a lighter hammer or tennis racket or seek-
