412 THE TREATMENT OF MODERN WESTERN DISEASES WITH CHINESE MEDICINEtremor is greater than that when using levodopa alone. 1 Webelieve this fact helps substantiate the hypothesis thatChinese medicinals used in tandem with Western pharmaceuticalsmay achieve a better result in this condition thanWestern medicines used alone.2. Yin vacuity is often complicated by qi vacuity, qi stagnation, and blood stasis. In those cases, one should add appropriatemedicinals to supplement the qi, rectify the qi, andquicken the blood.3. Chinese research suggests that Yang Jin Hua (FlosDaturae) is effective for the treatment of Parkinson’s disease. However, this medicinal is very toxic. The dosage is 0.3-0.6gper day. If one chooses to use this medicinal, the patientshould be kept under close observation.4. Other acupuncture methods which achieve good resultsfor Parkinson’s disease include the following:a. Electoacupuncture on Qian Ding (GV 21), Bai Hui (GV20), Cheng Ling (GB 18), and Xuan Lu (GB 5). One treatmentper day for two weeks equals one course. Allow fivedays rest between successive courses.b. Scalp acupuncture on the chorea and tremor area, motorarea, and sensory area and possibly on the vertigo and hearingarea and leg motor area. One treatment every other dayfor 10 treatments equals one course. Allow five days restbetween successive courses.5. Supplementation with vitamin C may help treat some ofthe side effects of levodopa and prolong this medication’sduration of effectiveness.6. Vitamin B 6 may be just as effective in some patients as takinglevodopa. Paradoxically, vitamin B 6 cannot be taken withsome forms of levodopa. Happily, Sinemet (a combination oflevodopa and carbidopa) can be taken along with supplementalvitamin B 6 and/or a diet high in vitamin B 6 . Foodshigh in this nutrient include grains, especially oats, raw nuts, especially peanuts, bananas, potatoes, liver, and fish.ENDNOTE1 The Burton Goldberg Group, Alternative Medicine, The Definitive Guide,Future Medicine Publishing, Inc., Puyallup, WA, 1993, p. 958
