As in modern Western medicine, when Raynaud’s phenomenonis merely a symptom of some other disease, Chinesemedical treatment should be primarily addressed to the patternscorresponding to the patient’s entire presentation. Sincethe disease mechanisms of Raynaud’s phenomenon in thatcase are part and parcel of the pathomechanisms of the maindisease, the symptoms of Raynaud’s phenomenon will automaticallydisappear if those pathomechanisms are treatedcomprehensively.2. If the fingertips or toes are markedly cold, numb, and/orpainful, one can make a decoction of Sheng Jiang (uncookedRhizoma Zingiberis), Xi Xin (Herba Asari), and Gui Zhi(Ramulus Cinnamomi) as a warm soak. It is also possible tosprinkle a small amount of La Jiao (cayenne pepper) into thegloves or socks during the wintertime or when working orplaying outdoors.3. Because Raynaud’s disease refers to idiopathic spasming ofthe arterioles, some modern Chinese formulas use windextinguishing, network vessel freeing medicinals for theirantispasmodic effect for the treatment of this condition. Arepresentative modern Chinese formula using this idea is JieJing Zhi Tong San (Resolve Spasm & Stop Pain Powder): GanJiang (dry Rhizoma Zingiberis) and Zhi Fu Zi (RadixLateralis Praeparatus Aconiti Carmichaeli), 60g each, WuGong (Scolopendra), Quan Xie (Scorpio), Tu Bie Chong(Eupolyphaga/Steleophaga), Shui Zhi (Hirudo), Lu Jiao(Cornu Cervi), and Hu Po (Succinum), 45g each, and YangJin Hua (Flos Daturae), 20g. These medicinals are groundinto powder and five grams are taken orally two times perday. This formula warms yang and scatters cold, quickens theblood and transforms stasis, frees the flow of the network vesselsand stops pain.4. According to Chinese practice, Dang Gui (RadixAngelicae Sinensis) and Gui Zhi (Ramulus Cinnamomi) arethe two most frequently prescribed medicinals for Raynaud’sdisease. For instance, this combination is found in Dang GuiSi Ni Tang (Dang Gui Four Counterflows Decoction). DangGui is acrid and warm, and it mainly treats disease of theblood division or aspect. It is a “holy medicinal among the[medicinals which treat] the blood.” Dang Gui both supplementsand quickens the blood. In other words, it harmonizesthe blood of the whole body. It is a main medicinal for thetreatment of counterflow chilling of the four limbs. Gui Zhiis sweet, acrid, and warm. It travels channels and networkvessels, moves blood division or aspect, warms the channelsand frees the flow of the vessels. It is a main medicinal forharmonizing the constructive and defensive. Gui Zhi is alsoa key ingredient for treating cold evils in the channels andnetwork vessels.5. Because cold, stasis, and vacuity are the main patterns ofthis disorder, other important medicinals for Raynaud’s diseaseaccording to clinical experience are Huang Qi (RadixAstragali) when there is yang qi vacuity, Zhi Fu Zi (RadixLateralis Praeparatus Aconiti Carmichaeli) and Xi Xin (HerbaAsari) when there is severe cold, Bai Shao (Radix PaeoniaeAlbae) when thereis blood vacuity, and Dan Shen (RadixSalviae Miltiorrhizae) and Hong Hua (Flos Carthami) whenthere is blood stasis.6. Some Chinese doctors prescribe Huang Qi (Radix
