For phlegm heat, add sixgrams each <strong>of</strong> Huang Qin (Radix Scutellariae) and HuangLian (Rhizoma Coptidis). For concomitant liver depression,add nine grams each <strong>of</strong> Chai Hu (Radix Bupleuri) and BaiShao (Radix Paeoniae Albae). For accumulation lumps belowthe rib-side, add 12 grams each <strong>of</strong> San Leng (RhizomaSparganii), E Zhu (Rhizoma Curcumae), and Dan Shen(Radix Salviae Miltiorrhizae).ACUPUNCTURE & MOXIBUSTION: Zhang Men (Liv 13),Zu San Li (St 36), Yin Ling Quan (Sp 9), Feng Long (St 40)ANALYSIS OF FORMULA: Supplementing Zu San Li fortifies thespleen and boosts the qi. Yin Ling Quan is a key point foreliminating dampness, while Feng Long is the main point fortransforming phlegm. When needled with draining method,they transform phlegm and disperse accumulation. WhenZhang Men is also drained, it rectifies the qi and dispersesaccumulation lumps below the rib-side. However, in case <strong>of</strong>hepatomegaly, care should be taken when needling this point.ADDITIONS & SUBTRACTIONS: In case <strong>of</strong> damp heat, addYang Ling Quan (GB 34). If there is food stagnation, addLiang Men (St 21). If there are accumulation lumps belowthe rib-side, add Qi Men (Liv 14), Ge Shu (Bl 17), and SanYin Jiao (Sp 6). If there is nausea and vomiting add Nei Guan(Per 6). For stomach and abdominal fullness, add Zhong Wan(CV 12), and for severe qi vacuity, add Tai Bai (Sp 3).8. BLOOD STASIS OBSTRUCTING THE NETWORKVESSELS PATTERNMAIN SYMPTOMS: Lancinating pain below the rib-side,pain worse at night, accumulation lumps below the rib-side,a dark, stagnant facial complexion, dark, purplish lips, head,neck, and chest region red spots and red threads, possible spidernevi and/or palmar eythema, a dark, purplish tongue orstatic macules or spots, and a bowstring, choppy pulseNOTE: Blood stasis may complicate any pattern <strong>of</strong> chronicactive hepatitis and especially when there is either fibrosis orcirrhosis <strong>of</strong> the liver.
