This type of arthritis occurs in 5-7% of psoriasispatients. In these cases, psoriasis of the skin or nails mayeither precede or follow joint involvement. Typically, it is thedistal interphalangeal joints of the fingers and toes which areprimarily affected. However, there may be asymmetric involvementof both large and small joints, including the sacroiliac andspine. Exacerbations and remissions of joint and skin symptomsoften coincide. The etiology of psoriasis is unknown inWestern medicine, although it is known that emotional stress, skin trauma, cold weather, infections, and certain drugs maytrigger attacks in susceptible individuals. Western medicineoffers no curative therapy for either the skin or joint lesions. What treatment exists is merely directed at controlling the skinlesions and joint inflammation, and this type of arthritis mayprogress to become chronic and crippling.
