300 THE TREATMENT OF MODERN WESTERN DISEASES WITH CHINESE MEDICINEdant liver yang hyperactivity and phlegm fire uncomplicatedby qi vacuity. In contradistinction, the most common substitutefor Ren Shen, i.e., Dang Shen (Radix Codonopsitis), lowersthe blood pressure. Other medicinals which raise the bloodpressure include Ma Huang (Herba Ephedrae), Lu Rong(Cornu Parvum Cervi), Zhi Shi (Fructus ImmaturusAurantii), Qing Pi (Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae Viride), BaiZhi (Radix Angelicae Dahuricae), Ai Ye (Folium ArtemisiaeArgyii), Bu Gu Zhi (Fructus Psoraleae), Xi Xin (Herba Asari),Ma Chi Xian (Herba Portulacae), and Bo He Ye (FoliumMenthae Haplocalysis).7. Erroneous taiji and qigong practice can actually raise theblood pressure even though these systems of exercise andrelaxation are often prescribed to lower the pressure.(Erroneous taiji and qigong can also cause neurological andpsychiatric conditions.) Therefore, patients using these systemsshould be under the direct supervision of a qualifiedteacher. If blood pressure becomes high while practicingeither taiji or qigong, patients should stop their practice untila qualified teacher can assess and modify their practice.8. According to Chinese dietary therapy, the following commonfoods and herbs can all help reduce blood pressure:hawthorn fruit, chrysanthemum flower, celery, onion, garlic, carrot, shepherd’s purse, apple, pear, and tangerine.Hawthorn fruit is useful for the treatment of essential hypertensionaccompanied by hyperlipidemia and coronary heartdisease. Chrysanthemum flower, celery, and shepherd’s purseare used for essential hypertension presenting either liver fireflaming upward or yin vacuity-yang hyperactivity patterns.Onion and garlic can both prevent and lower hypertension.9. Chinese medicine does not achieve perfectly satisfactoryresults in lowering the blood pressure and keeping it low. Therefore, the combination of Chinese and Western medicinesis often the treatment of choice. In this case, Chinesemedicinals may be used to treat those aspects of the patient’scondition not covered by the Western medication or can beused to treat the side effects of Western antihypertensivemedications. In either cases, one should simply do a patterndiscrimination of the patient’s signs and symptoms while ontheir Western drugs and proceed accordingly. If the combinationof Western and Chinese therapies achieves good reductionin blood pressure, it may be possible for the patient touse a lower dose of their Western medication or even relysolely on Chinese medicinals. However, while this may beboth the patient and practitioner’s goal, it may not always bepossible.ENDNOTES1 He, J. et al., “Effect of Migration on Blood Pressure: The Yi People Study,”Epidemiology, #2, March, 1991, p. 88-972 Glauser, S.C., Bello, C.T. & Gauser, E.M., “Blood-Cadmium Levels inNormotensive & Untreated Hypertensive Humans,” Lancet, #1, April,1976, p. 717-7183 “What Are the Drug Treatments for High Blood Pressure?”WebMDHealth, http://my.webmd.com/content/dmk/dmk_article_5462194
