560 THE TREATMENT OF MODERN WESTERN DISEASES WITH CHINESE MEDICINEurination, add San Yin Jiao (Sp 6). If sand or small stonesremain, add Qi Hai Shu (Bl 24) and Pang Guang Shu (Bl 28)with electroacupuncture. For concomitant spleen qi vacuity, add Zu San Li (St 36). For severe kidney yin vacuity, add FuLiu (Ki 7).REMARKS1. Patients with kidney stones generally say that the painassociated with the movement of stones in the urinary tractis the worse pain they have ever experienced. Therefore, duringacute attacks, everything possible should be done to promotepain relief. Electroacupuncture and ear acupunctureshould both be employed. Each acupuncture session can last1-3 hours. When strong stimulation is used, acupuncture isusually effective for relieving the pain of acute crises and, according to our experience, is even often more effective thanWestern medicine. In addition, intense, sharp, lancinatingpain indicates blood stasis. Blood-quickening medicinalsappropriate for the treatment of kidney stones accompaniedby severe pain include Chuan Shan Jia (Squama Manitis),San Leng (Rhizoma Sparganii), E Zhu (Rhizoma Curcumae),Zao Jiao Ci (Spina Gleditschiae), Ru Xiang (Olibanum), andMo Yao (Myrrha).2. Patients with urolithiasis should generally drink a lot ofwater.3. In China, Chinese medicinals combined with electroacupunctureand Western medications, such as atropineand dihydrochlorothiazide, are used conjunctively for thetreatment of this condition in cases where the stones are lessthan one centimeter in diameter and there is no serious concomitanturinary tract infection. In that case, Chinese medicinalsand Western drugs are given every day and electroacupunctureis given twice a week for 6-8 treatments. After a 1-2 week rest, a second course of treatment may beadministered if necessary.4. Obviously, several of the above patterns may presentsimultaneously. For instance, it is not uncommon to seepatients with urolithiasis with liver-spleen disharmoniescomplicated by yin vacuity, damp heat, and blood stasis. Insuch cases, the practitioner should determine the relativeproportion or importance of each pattern and create a combinedtreatment plan based on those proportions. For kidney yin vacuity with damp heat, consider using SanJin Hu Tao Tang (Three Golds & Walnut Decoction): JinQian Cao (Herba Lysimachiae/Desmodii), 30-60g, ShengDi (uncooked Radix Rehmanniae), 15g, Hai Jin Sha(Spora Lygodii), Xuan Shen (Radix Scrophulariae), Shi Wei(Folium Pyrrosiae), Qu Mai (Herba Dianthi), Che QianCao (Herba Plantaginis), and Hua Shi (Talcum), 12g each,Tian Men Dong (Tuber Asparagi), Bian Xu (HerbaPolygoni Avicularis), and Niu Xi (Radix AchyranthisBidentatae), 9g each, Ji Nei Jin (Endothelium CorneumGigeriae Galli), 6g, Mu Tong (Caulis Akebiae) and GanCao (Radix Glycyrrhizae), 4.5g each, and Hu Tao Ren(Semen Juglandis), 4 fruits.Tong Lin Yi Shen Pei Shi Tang (Free the Flow of Strangury,Boost the Kidneys & Expel Stones Decoction) is a complexformula for kidney yang vacuity with damp heat: Jin QianCao (Herba Lysimachiae/Desmodii), Hai Jin Sha (SporaLygodii), and Che Qian Zi (Semen Plantaginis), 30g each, ShiWei (Folium Pyrrosiae), Wang Bu Liu Xing (Semen Vaccariae),and Bu Gu Zhi (Fructus Psoraleae), 15g each, and Xu Duan(Radix Dipsaci), Gou Qi (Fructus Lycii), and Shu Di (cookedRadix Rehmanniae), 9g each.5. A simple home remedy for reducing the excruciating painduring acute crises is to do acupressure at Cheng Shan (Bl 57)and Wei Zhong (Bl 40). These two points should be pressedstrongly for 15-45 seconds. This is often sufficient to lowerthe pain for 1-3 hours. Occasionally, this manipulation caneven promote the expulsion of urinary calculi.6. Other effective pairs of points for treating renal colic withacupuncture include: Shen Shu (Bl 23) plus Shui Dao (St 28)or Shen Shu (Bl 23) plus Gui Lai (St 29), Nei Guan (Per 6)plus San Yin Jiao (Sp 6), and Jing Men (GB 25) plus a shipoints. This latter combination may also be treated withelectroacupuncture.7. For Chinese ear acupuncture, use Kidney, Bladder,Urinary Tract, and Lumbus points.8. Use Mu Tong (Caulis Akebiae) long-term with cautionsinceit may cause nephrotoxicity if Mu Tong has been substitutedby Aristolochia Manchurensis.9. The most commonly used Chinese medicinals for treatingstone strangury and disinhibiting the urination in premodernformulas are: Jin Qian Cao(Herba Lysimachiae/Desmodii), Hai Jin Sha (Spora Lygodii), Shi Wei (FoliumPyrrosiae), Hu Po (Succinum), Qu Mai (Herba Dianthi),Wang Bu Liu Xing (Semen Vaccariae), Hua Shi (Talcum), andBian Xu (Herba Polygoni Avicularis). Typically, one or moreof these medicinals is combined with other medicinals whicheliminate dampness and disinhibit urination, such as DongKui Zi (Semen Malvae), Che Qian Zi (Semen Plantaginis),Ze Xie (Rhizoma Alismatis), Bi Xie (Rhizoma DioscoreaeHypoglaucae), and Mu Tong (Caulis Akebiae). Anotherimportant medicinal for the treatment of urinary calculi is JiNei Jin (Endothelium Corneum Gigeriae Galli) which isempirically known to transform stones. In most modernChinese medicinal formulas, one will find Jin Qian Cao(Herba Lysimachiae/Desmodii) and Hai Jin Sha (SporaLygodii), very often Hu Po (Succinum) and Ji Nei Jin
